I can’t tell y’all how many times I have gotten this exact DM. “Is the Snoo REALLY worth the money?” And my answer to every one of you has been, “YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!”
The Snoo was one of those things that could have been a total overly hyped product or one that was completely justified in its level of hype. My response: Completely justified and deserving of the hype. Rory has been a completely different sleeping situation than Knox from the get go and my GOSH I wish this thing existed when Knox was a newborn. Rory is an incredible sleeper… Like, insane. We aren’t sure if it’s because he was in the NICU and they sleep trained him for us (lol) or if he really is just the easiest baby from the womb.
Differences in Knox v. Rory as newborn sleepers:
Knox: Typical baby who had night and day flipped. Days were easy and nights were absolutely miserable the first 2-3 weeks. And, poor Paul, I was recovering from a C Section and literally couldn’t walk or help with anything for a large majority of the terror… He still has nightmares about those first few weeks 😉 BUT, week 2 we decided there must be an answer to getting Knox to sleep (again, the Snoo didn’t exist yet). So we had to sleep train him, getting him to stay awake during the witching hour of about 6-11 as much as humanly possible and then we gave him a large feeding to knock him out for as long as possible. 4 days later, we had a baby sleeping through the night (like, 11-4 or 5 ish).
Rory: CLOCK WORK. This kid literally was on his own schedule from the day we brought him home. He wants to eat every 3 hours on the dot. Grunts when he is hungry *doesn’t cry* and then goes right back to sleep through the night after feeding. We place him in the Snoo at 7:30ish right now after his big evening feeding, and we are making it through to about 11 for another feeding and go until 4 or 5 AM most nights now. We have had a few nights where he skips the 11 PM feeding, which is glorious. But most of the time have just one feeding in the middle of the night now vs. the first couple of weeks it was (10, 1, 4)… we were going to bed at 730 PM with the boys the first couple of weeks (#tired) so that 10 PM feeding felt like a middle of the night feeding ha!
Anyways, all this to say, the Snoo has been amazing to give us SOLID sleep in-between feedings. We wake up more in the middle of the night than we did with Knox right now, but it’s easy and we are less tired than we were with Knox. Rory is lulled RIGHT back to sleep and we’ve only had ONE time the Snoo couldn’t soothe him back to sleep and it said we needed to pick him up. (Literally the app tells you to pick up your baby… haha) The Snoo is fascinating, changing sounds and motions according to the baby’s cry. I can hear it change from white noise to a heart beat when he starts stirring… insane! And it picks up the motion speed as if a mom is rocking him when he’s restless.
Some have said they’re afraid of having to wean the baby off the Snoo as they grow up, but honestly… we’ve not experienced that at all. Rory sleeps in the Snoo at night and occasionally for a day time nap if we know he needs to but isn’t falling asleep. We also nap him in our portable bassinet that we had for Knox (we keep this in the living room currently), The Dock a Tot on the sofa, and he’s napped in his own big crib now, too. I think if you generally just keep them switched up from day one -not relying entirely on the Snoo to get them to fall asleep- then you won’t experience the need to wean.
My honest opinion: Just give the Snoo a try at the very least! If we’d had this thing with Knox, I think our first weeks would have been so much easier. A great middle ground is to rent the Snoo, which is $130/month. Then, if you just are planning on them sleeping in it a few months or are afraid it won’t work for your baby, you won’t feel like you wasted your money. But, if you’re ready to just commit, I believe this thing is worth it!
